Project

Car crash simulation using ANSYS workbench

Objective:

To perform a frontal impact car crash simulation in the explicit dynamic analysis module using ANSYS workbench and also perform a parametric study using three different values for thickness for the car body.

Procedure:

Explicit dynamic analysis module is opened in the project schematic window of ANSYS workbench and renamed as Car crash.

Materials used:

Stainless steel NL(Non Linear) material is chosen for the car body which is selected from the General nonlinear materials section of Engineering Data sources.

Geometry:

The given model is imported into Designmodeler of ANSYS workbench and renamed as Car body and wall accordingly.

The model is checked if any abnormalities are present in it.

Meshing:

In Mechanical, the given model is meshed with 90mm element size with default conditions.

The car body is assigned with Stainless steel NL material and the thickness is given as 0.2mm initially.

The thickness of the car body is parametrized by clicking on the check mark.

Symmetry:

A symmetrical region is created for the wall in X direction by selecting the side face of the wall.

Also, another symmetrical region is created for the Car body edges in X direction by selecting the half body edges of the Car.

Boundary conditions:

The rear parts of the car body are given fixed support.

The back side face of the wall is given a displacement of 500mm in positive Z direction.

Analysis settings:

The simulation is set to run for 0.001 s with maximum number of cycles as 1E +07 and maximum energy error as 0.1.

The time steps are left default as Program controlled.

Results:

In the parameters section, the thickness values for the car body are changed accordingly and set as current to update the project. The solution component is solved for the retained data.

Directional deformation is computed in X direction.

Case 1: Thickness 0.2mm

Total deformation

Equivalent stress

Directional deformation

Case 2: Thickness 0.4mm

Total deformation

Equivalent stress

Directional deformation

Case 3: Thickness 0.6mm

Total deformation

Equivalent stress

Directional deformation

Inference:

Conclusion:

Thus, the frontal impact car crash simulation is performed using ANSYS workbench and the results are obtained for different thickness values of the car body.

We conclude that, greater the thickness of the car body, higher is the stress and smaller is the total deformation and vice versa.
