Car Crash Simulation using Ansys Workbench

AIM:

To perform a car crash analysis using ansys workbench.

PROBLEM STATEMENT:

  • To perform a parametric study using 3 different values of thickness for the car body. Here the car body remains stationary but the wall displaces to a distance of 500mm towards the car body for the purpose of collision.
  • Assign the material for car body as stainless steel NL and for wall as structural steel.

PROCEDURE FOR IMPORTING THE MODEL:

  • Open Explicit dynamics from the Analysis systems.
  • Assign the material type to the model to be imported using the tool Engineering data-Edit-Engineering data sources.

STRUCTURAL STEEL MATERIAL PROPERTIES

STAINLESS STEEL NL MATERIAL PROPERTIES

  • Import the MODEL file using the tool Geometry-import.

PROCEDURE FOR ANALYSIS:

  • Update the model to work on the model for structural analysis.

  • Under Model-geometry assign the name for the model and assign structural steel as the material type for the wall and stainless steel NL as the material for car body.
  • To reduce the computational time, only half portion of the geometry will be used in analysis, we will be applying symmetry to generate the result considering the whole model

SYMMETRY 1 SYMMETRY 2

  • Mesh the wall considering the method as tetrahedron.
  • Mesh the car body surface considering the method as triangles.
  • Mesh the whole model considering default mesh.

  • In Analysis setting tab under Explicit Dynamics menu enter the end time as 0.001.
  • Insert the displacement submenu under the analysis setting tab to provide the displacement distance of 500mm for the wall in z-direction towards the car body.

  • Provide a fixed support to the surface of car body to prevent it from sliding off.

  • Insert the total deformation and von mises stress solution. Then press f5 to solve.

RESULT:

FOR THICKNESS OF 0.3mm

TOTAL DEFORMATION

VON-MISES STRESS

FOR THICKNESS OF 0.5mm

TOTAL DEFORMATION

VON-MISES STRESS

FOR THICKNESS OF 0.7mm

TOTAL DEFORMATION

VON-MISES STRESS

COMPARISION OF RESULTS

From the above result we can infere that as the thickness of carbody increases the resistance to deformation and stress increases which results in decrease of stress and deformation values.
