CAR CRASH SIMULATION

OBJECTIVE:

The objective of this simulation is to analyse the frontal car crash by a wall. The simulation is performed for three different parameters of thickness for the car body and the results of total deformation and equivalent stress is to be found out.

PROCEDURE:

The Explicit dynamics is selected and the material of Structural steel and Stainless steel NL are selected. The geometry is inserted and also checked for any abnormalities. The Mechanical is opened and the unnecessary parts are suppressed. The car body is assigned to Stainless steel NL with a thickness of 0.3mm for the first case and the wall is to Structural steel. For the remaining two cases, the thickness is only changed to 0.6 and 0.9 mm.

The default contact regions are deleted. The symmetry is given to to the wall and the car body to allow the load perfectly. In the meshing, patch conforming method is given to the wall of tetrahedron and the triangle method to the car body. Then the face sizing is given to the rear faces of the car body. And the mesh size is given as 500 mm.

In the Analysis setting, the number of steps is given to 5 and the end time to 0.001 s. Then the rear car body which is not going to be in contact with the wall is fixed and the displacement of 500 mm ranging from 0 to 500 mm is given to the wall in the z direction.

RESULTS:

The simulation is done and the results are obtained.

CONCLUSION:

The Total deformation and the Equivalent stress of the thickness of 0.3 mm has the maximum value. When increasing the thickness, we can find that the deformation is decreasing because of the decrement of ductile nature in which it increases the hardness of the car body. It also influences the stress to reduce during increase of thickness.
