CAR CRASH ANALYSIS

CAR CRASH ANALYSIS

In this challenge we will perform the crash test of a car body with a wall using explicit dynamics assigning different thicknesses to the car body. Various steps which are undertaken are explained below-

  1. First, we have selected the Stainless-Steel NL from material library in order to assign it to the car body.

  1. Opened the ANSYS mechanical and assigned Stainless-steel NL material to the car body, after that various thickness (0.3mm, 0.4mm and 0.5mm) to the car body and then structural steel to the wall by default. Suppressing the other two bodies as they play no role in the analysis.
  1. Deleted the contact between the car body and wall which was generated by ANSYS by default. After this symmetry region was assigned to wall and car bodies along x-axis.

  1. Mesh is produced by default. Finer mesh was resulting in an error that’s why switched to by default mesh. Resulted mesh is shown below-

  1. Before setting the boundary conditions, the end time value was provided in the analysis setting to 0.001s according to the video, as it is necessary to assign the end time value in explicit dynamics.
  1. The displacement of 500mm was provided to the wall along Z axis while keeping the car body fixed. These boundary condition can be seen below-

Boundary condition

  1. Results

Thickness of the car body=0.3mm

Thickness of the car body=0.4mm

Thickness of the car body=0.5mm

-Total Deformation

Max deformation=1043.8mm

Max deformation=1042.1mm Max deformation=1040.7mm

-Equivalent Stress

Max stress=2442.5 Mpa

Max stress=2594 Mpa Max stress=2671.1 Mpa
  1. Conclusion- As we can see in the above results that if we increase the thickness of the car body deformation decreases while the stress value increases. This is because as we increase the thickness of the car body, it will provide more resistance to the deformation and thus stress develops more. Therefore, when the car body thickness is 0.3mm it will get deformed easily and stresses develop less as compare to the other thickness car bodies. Thus, we observe suck kind of result.
