Static Structural Analysis of Iphone bending and obtaining the fatigue life of the Phone Using ANSYS Workbench
Objective : To simulate the bending of Iphone and obtaining the fatigue life of the Phone
Case 1
Geometry
The geometry is been import to the design module and the stiffness behavior of the fingers are set to be rigid
Materials
- Aluminum Alloy NL
- Glass
- Polyethylene
- Structural steel
These are four materials that are used in this simulation
Frame - Aluminum Alloy NL
Display- Glass
Inter-Part of the phone - Polyethylene
Fingers- Structural Steel
Connection
Contact Region
- The Frictionless type of contact was applied to the fingers - Phone Frame & Display
- The Bonded Type of contact was applied to the Display and the Frame
Joint
- Body - Ground Fixed Joint was Applied to All the Supporting Finger on the top of the Display
- Body- Ground Translational Joint(along X-axis) was applied to the both pushing Finger which is at bottom
Mesh
Face Sizing
Face sizing is done on the face of the pushing finger and the bottom face of frame
Element Size:3mm
Analysis setting
Boundary Condition
- Fixed support is created at the two end of the phone frame
- Displacement is created at two side face of the phone frame and allows displacement only in y axis
- Joint Load
Displacement is created to two Translation joint along Y axis
Case 2
In Case 2 the position of the two Pushing Finger is changed , they were moved to the centre of frame
from the old position there were moved X=22.5mm Z=10mm
For the Aluminum Alloy NL Material S-N curve is added
Remaining all Pre Processing Setup were same as Case 1
Post Processing for Case 1
- Directional Deformation
- Equivalent Stress
- Stress Tool (Yeild Criterion)
- Factor of Safety For Frame
Solution Output
CASE - 1
Directional Deformation (5.3225mm) along Y-axis
Equivalent Stress(333.7MPa)
- Factor of Safety For Frame (Yeild Criterion)(Min-0.68495)
Post Processing for Case2
- Directional Deformation
- Equivalent Stress
- Factor of Safety For Frame
- Life for Frame
Solution Output
Directional Deformation (4.4269mm) along Y-axis
Equivalent Stress(313.37MPa)
- Factor of Safety For Frame(Min-0.74822)
- Life for Frame In days
1 Day = 1Cycle
Results & Comparison
The Stress Concentration is less in case 2 Compare to Case 1, Because When the load is applied on the centre of the frame the stress are uniformly distributed so that result less stress and lesser deformation compare to case 1
