ASSIGNMENT 2
ASSIGNMENT 2
- DENSITY OF STEEL= 7.8E-3 g/mm3
(YOUNG’S MODULUS)STEEL = 210000 N/mm2
(SPEED OF SOUND IN STEEL)STEEL = SQRT (E/Rho)
= SQRT (210000/7.8E-3)
c=5186.52 m/s
- LENGTH OF THE RAIL = l = 1000 m
TIME TAKEN BY THE SHOCKWAVE TO TRAVEL THE LENGTH= L/C
= 1000/5186.52
= 192.8 ms
- TIME FOR SOUND TO TRAVEL THE LENGTH OF RAIL = 192.8 ms
5.Tfreq = 24.1 ms
7.2D &3D MESHING OF THE 3 COMPONENTs A. HOUSING.HM
1. Firstly , I selected the mixed type wireframe viewing mode so as to check any discrepancies in the geometry, but there weren’t any, so I moved on to 2D meshing.
2.Then I used the automesh feature in the 2D panel to mesh the components.
3.Then , I changed the values for the mesh quality criteria parameters, according the values given in the question.
4.There were a few elements with warpage values more than 15.I used the smooth feature, with no. of iterations =10, to improve the shape of the elements. Then I used the translate feature to decrese the warpage angles to a value below 15 degrees.
5.For elements having values of warpage of about 50- 60 degrees, I used the split feature to split them into trias. The other parameters have no ill elements .
6.Then I used the tetramesh feature in the 3D menu to create 3D mesh.
7.I changed the value of the 3D mesh quality parameters , and there weren’t any ill elements.
B. ARM_BRACKET.HM
- I made the 3d mesh for the file during the tutorials , so what’s left was to check the 3D mesh for fault elements , and there was no faulty elements when checked in the check elem feature in the tool menu and 3d subpanel.
C. 1D_ELEMENTS.HM
- One of the two surfaces , in the file was already meshed .So , I used the the distance feature in the geom panel to check the distance between two adjacent nodes to get mesh size for the 2D mesh.
- It came out to be 0.5 mm. I meshed the whole surface . They were all quad elements with a perfect mesh flow , so there was no need for checking the faulty elements.
- I used the distance feature again to get the distance between the two surfaces , so as to get the density of the 3D mesh between the two surfaces.
- It came out to be 5mm, so iset the density to 10, so that the mesh size becomes 0.5 mm.
5. I used the linear solid feature in the 3 d panel , with density equal to 10, and the respective elements selected , the corresponding nodes for the mesh , and then mesh the surfaces , the mesh had perfectly aligned brick elements , so no need for quality check parameters.
