Project

Analysing steel rail component using Radioss and comparing results of base simulation and simulation with improved shell element properties

OBJECTIVE

To Compare the results of base simulation and results from simulation with improved shell element properties.

At the end of the simulation, do the energy error and mass error checks and determine whether results would be acceptable

Commenting whether there is any change in the results and why there is any change in the result.

Case (1)

1. Import the Element_Formulation-Shell-3_assignment_0000.rad file

2. change the following parameters under the solver tab

T stop = 55

T start = 25

T frequency = 60

3. Under Analysis tab Radioss is chosen. Then the solver is run under base simulation settings.

In the output files .h3d file is opened in hyperview and animation is seen

In the hyperview it is seen that maximum displacement is 7.610E+02.

Then the von-mises stress plot is seen

4. At the end of the simulation the energy error and mass error checks are analysed

  • The engine out file is opened in notepad to view the results
  • At the time 54.99 thr energy error is -10.3% which is less than the acceptable value of 5% and the mass error is 0.1695E-03 which is less than acceptable value of <10%
  • Hence the mass and energy error are acceptable

5. Since the energy and mass errors are acceptable the plots of rigid wall forces, internal energy, hourglass energy, contact energy, total energy of the simulations are made

Hypergraph is opened and T01 file is opened to plot various graph

a) Below figure shows Internal energy and Kinetic energy vs Time graph

b) Below figure shows Contact energy and Hourglass energy vs Time Graph

c) Below figure shows Total energy vs Time Graph

d) Below figure shows Time Step vs Time Graph

e) Below figure shows Normal, Tangent and Total resultant force Vs Time Graph

Case (2) Run the simulation with improved shell properties

6&7) To improve the shell formulation the following chnages are made to the shell properties

Parameters Advantage of using the mentioned parameters

Ishell =24

QEPH 4 nodes shells are best combination of cost and accuracy.

Ismstr=2

Full geometric nonlinearities (default)with possible small strain formulation activation in RADIOSS Engine.

Ish3n=2

Standard 3 noded shell (C0)with modification for large rotation(default)

N=5 Number of integration points set to 5 for accuracy bending.

Ithick=1

Thickness change is taken into account for accuracy.

Iplas=1

Iterative plasticity for good accuracy.

Then these values are changed as in the case (1)

T stop = 55

T start = 25

T frequency = 60

Then by using radioss the simulation is done with improved shell properties.

The output h3d. file is viewed inn hyperview

The maximum displacement is 7.778E+02 mm

Then the von-mises stress plot is viewed

  • After the simulation the energy and mass errors are checked.
  • At time 54.98 energy error = -0.1% < 5%
  • At time 54.98 mass error = 0.1659E-03 < 10%
  • Thus thus energy and mass error are acceptable and reduced when compared to results of case(1)

8) Comparing the results of case(1) and case (2)

A comparison is made between the results of two cases and the reason for their deviation from each other is explained

CONCLUSION

  • RESULTS OF BASE SIMULATION AND SIMULATION WITH IMPROVED SHELL FORMULTAIONS ARE COMPARED AND REASONS FOR THEIR CHANGE IS EXPLAINED
  • QEPH USAGE GIVES BEST POSSIBLE RESULT.
  • HYPERVIEW AND HYPERGRAPH ARE USED TO OBSERVE THE OUTPUT RESULT OF THE SIMULATION.
