3D meshing on Housing, Chassis and Crank housing model using Hypermesh
Objective- To perform 3D meshing on housing, chassis and crank housing model.
Procedure
Housing model
- Import the geometry
- Delete the solid part
- Clear out geometrical errors if present
Why do we perform meshing?
The basic idea of finite element analysis is to make calculations at only limited number of points and then interpolate the results for the entire domain. Any continuous object has infinite degrees of freedom and it’s just not possible to solve this problem in this format. Finite Element Method reduces the degrees of freedom from infinite to finite with the help of discretization or meshing.
- Perform tetra meshing from 3d panel using tria elements only.
- Using mask option we check for the performed tetra meshing.
What is tet collapse?
Tetrahedral element quality can be checked by seeing the element values for tet collapse. It is basically the height of tetra elements. Tetra elements whose collapse value falls below the value specified are highlighted when the tetra collapse function is selected.
- Clear out the elements failing for tet collapse.
- Improve the quality for tetramesh by remeshing it under 3d>tetramesh>tetraremesh parameters.

Model-4
- Import the geometry
- Delete the solid part
- Defeature the fillet regions which fall for minimum length error under geom tab>defeature>surf fillet
- Delete the teeths as they will not pass for quality criteria.
- Join the two surfaces under geom tab>surface edt>extend
- Perform meshing from 2d panel using tria elements with 6mm as element size.
- Improve quality for minimum and maximum length error.
- Now convert the 2d mesh to 3d meshing under 3d tab using tetra mesh under 3d tab
- Using mask option we check for the performed tetra meshing.
- Clear out the elements failing for tet collapse.
- Quick tetra meshing is performed on rest of the components.
Learning Outcome
