Project

3D tetra meshing using Hypermesh

Objective:

To create 3D meshing (Tetra mesh) for the given components (Housing, Crank case, Chassis assembly) Element sizes: Min: 2mm Target: 5mm for housing and 6mm for crank case and chassis assembly. Tet collapse: 0.15

Procedure: (Housing and Crank case)

  • Change the user profile to Radioss
  • Import the housing model into the hypermesh
  • Check the model by going to topo mode for the presense of solid if present then delete it by Pressing F2 > solid > displayed > delete entities
  • Toggle the unnecessary edges by quick edit panel > toggle edge
  • Before creating 3D tetra mesh we need to create 2D surface mesh by pressing F12 button
  • After creating 2d surface mesh check the quality for the min length by going to Tools > Check elements > min length
  • After this we need to convert the 2D mesh into the 3D mesh by going to 3D > Tetramesh > elements > mesh

3D tetra meshing fo crank case

  • After tetra meshing check for the Tet collapse by pressing F10 if there are failed elements try to make it to zero by increasing the length or height (F4)

  • Tetra remesh tool can be used to remesh the failed elements

Procedure: (Chassis)

  • Import the Chassis model into the hypermesh
  • Check the model by going to topo mode for the presense of solid if present then delete it by Pressing F2 > solid > displayed > delete entities
  • Toggle the unnecessary edges by quick edit panel > toggle edge
  • Before creating 3D tetra mesh we need to create 2D surface mesh by pressing F12 button
  • After creating 2d surface mesh check the quality for the min length by going to Tools > Check elements > min length
  • After this we need to convert the 2D mesh into the 3D mesh by going to 3D > Tetramesh > elements > mesh
  • We can create volume tetra mesh without deleting the solid by going to 3D > tetra mesh > volume tetra mesh > solid > displayed > mesh

  • After tetra meshing check for the Tet collapse by pressing F10 if there are failed elements try to make it to zero by increasing the length or height (F4)

Conclusion:

  • In this challenge we learned how to create the 3D Tetra mesh using Hypermesh and learned about tet collapse and its importance in 3D meshing.
