Project

3D Meshing of housing and chasis

Objective:

To Create Tetramesh for Housing with the following criteria,

Elements sizes: Min- 2mm, Target- 5mm,Max- 7mm, Tet collapse: 0.15 and

To create 3D meshing for the given Models with the following criteria,

Create 3D mesh with 6mm as target element size.

Procedure:

1) Initially the given model housing is imported in hypermesh by clicking import geometry command in the tool bar.

2) The model will be displayed as a wireframe model, the surface highlight option is clicked to display its surface. The fixed points will be displayed as default, which can be removed by clicking display fixed point option.

3) The solids in the model are selected and deleted initially. The geometry and the topology of this component is checked by viewing the colour of lines around the surfaces.

4) If the surfaces are surrounded by the red lines, then the surface is to be cleaned up and made to look like above image.

5) Remove the surfaces which are less than 2mm since it will cause fail in meshing due to minimum element size.

6) Then the component is automeshed (2D meshing) after the cleanup of geometry is done. The component is meshed part by part to ensure the quality and flow of mesh. While 2D meshing only trias are used.

7) Then the elements in the component are checked for 2D elements quality criteria. If the defective elements are present, they are cleaned up.

8) After that the 2D elements created are subjected to 3D tetra meshing by selecting all 2D tria elements in 3D panel.

9) Then the 3D elements are checked for quality criteria mainly tetcollapse which is to be 0.15.

10) Then the another given model is imported in hypermesh by clicking import geometry command in the tool bar.

11) The model will be displayed as a wireframe model, the surface highlight option is clicked to display its surface. The fixed points will be displayed as default, which can be removed by clicking display fixed point option.

12) The solids in the model are selected and deleted initially. The geometry and the topology of this component is checked by viewing the colour of lines around the surfaces.

13) If the surfaces are surrounded by the red lines, then the surface is to be cleaned up and made to look like as in below image.

14) Remove the surfaces which are less than 2mm since it will cause fail in meshing due to minimum element size. The surfaces can be removed or else toggled.

15) Then the component is automeshed (2D meshing) after the cleanup of geometry is done. The component is meshed part by part to ensure the quality and flow of mesh. While 2D meshing only trias are used.

16) Then the elements in the component are checked for 2D elements quality criteria. If the defective elements are present, they are cleaned up.

17) After that the 2D elements created are subjected to 3D tetra meshing by selecting all 2D tria elements in 3D panel.

18) Then the 3D elements are checked for quality criteria mainly tetcollapse which is to be 0.15.

19) Then the another given model chasis is imported in hypermesh by clicking import geometry command in the tool bar. Since the model consists of more components, only one component is made to view and other components are hidden.

20) The model will be displayed as a wireframe model, the surface highlight option is clicked to display its surface. The fixed points will be displayed as default, which can be removed by clicking display fixed point option.

21) The solids in the model are selected and deleted initially. The geometry and the topology of this component is checked by viewing the colour of lines around the surfaces.

22) If the surfaces are surrounded by the red lines, then the surface is to be cleaned up.

23) Then the component is automeshed (2D meshing) after the cleanup of geometry is done. The component is meshed part by part to ensure the quality and flow of mesh. While 2D meshing only trias are used.

24) Then the elements in the component are checked for 2D elements quality criteria. If the defective elements are present, they are cleaned up.

25) After that the 2D elements created are subjected to 3D tetra meshing by selecting all 2D tria elements in 3D panel.

26) Then the other components are viewed one by one and above steps are followed for each and every components.

27) Geometrical cleanup of all other components are done as shown below for each and every components.

28) Meshing of all the components are done as shown below for each and every components separately.

Results and conclusion:

The given different components housing and chasis are meshed with the quality criteria as given. The different surfaces in the component are 2D meshed with trias separately. Finally, the created 2D elements are meshed to 3D tetra elements and checked for tet collapse. In this challenge learned different commands to do 3D meshing. Final 3D mesh of the components are represented below and hypermesh model is attached in the zip file.
