Course Overview

  • In this course, students will deal with the analysis and design of the substructures of a bridge.
  • Students will also get hands-on experience with analysis and design software such as STAAD.Pro and Autodesk Structural Bridge Design.
  • In this course, students will learn how to analyse and design the substructures using the above software and effective utilisation of Microsoft Excel tools.

Course Syllabus

Week 01 - Understanding the Bridges, Codes, Loads, Load Combinations, and Bearings & Articulation

  • The classification of bridges, their significance, the construction and collapse of bridges
  • Code used for bridge analysis and desgn 
  • Loads acting on a bridge and their corresponding codal provisions.
  • Load combinations as per IRS and IRC codes (e.g., DL, LL, etc.) into the design.
  • Different types of bearings are commonly used in bridges
  • The concept of codal provisions pertaining to bearings
  • Bearings influence in the substructure's behaviour (fixed or free)

Week 02 - Different Types of Substructures

  • Abutments
    • Wall type
    • Spill through
    • Abutment Pier
    • Retaining walls
  • Different types of piers and their design considerations

Week 03 - Introduction to STAAD.Pro and Modeling of Simple Structures

  • Modelling and analysing simple structures in STAAD.Pro
  • Frames & Trusses (Geometric modelling, defining elements, and properties).

Week 04 - Pier Caps- RCC and PSC

  • Different types and concepts of pier cap design
  • Pier cap major function and load transfer mechanism.

Week 05 - Corbels

  • Corbels behavior
  • Corbels analysis
  • Corbels design guidelines.

Week 06 - Modeling of Bridge

  • The realistic data of our bridge and other data required for design
  • Modelling of superstructure and substructure of bridges and defining boundary conditions in STAAD.Pro software

Week 07 - Applying various Loads and Load Combinations of Bridge

  • Various loads applied to the bridge
  • Possible load combinations generated in STAAD.Pro

Week 08 - Analysis, Results Interpretation in STAAD.Pro and Summarizing the Results

  • Analysing a bridge and interpreting the results for various elements
  • Summarising the results (forces) and arrive at the worst possible effect on our substructure

Week 09 - Capacity check using Autodesk Structural Bridge Design (ASBD) Software

  • Modelling of substructure/ section in software (Autodesk Structural Bridge Design) and define sections, properties, worst load effect, analyse and check design in the software.

Week 10 - RC Detailing

  • Code clauses
  • RC Detailing
    • Flexural reinforcement
    • Shear reinforcement
    • Crackwidth
    • Ductile detailing for Seismic resistance
    • Anchorage length
    • Splicing (lap lengths)
    • Bundled high strength deformed bars

Week 11 - Conclusion and Further Studies
