There are a few industry-oriented skill sets that all engineers should possess if they wish to start a career as a BIW engineer. 

 

There are many mechanical sector standard requirements for BIW skilled engineers, but there are some basics that every candidate should have.

What Is the Job Description of BIW Engineer?

 

An BIW engineer designs and builds the Body-In-White segments of a car. In other words, they're responsible for the car's structural integrity.

 

These are the basic skill sets you will need to possess to start your career as a BIW engineer. 

 

  • First, you need to understand vehicle assembling. You need to visualise the finished product in your head and understand how the different parts will fit together.
  • Second, you need to be able to work with metal. BIW engineers use a lot of metal in their designs, so you need to be comfortable working with it.
  • Third, you need to have strong maths skills. BIW engineers use maths to determine how much weight different parts of the car can hold and to make sure everything is structurally sound.

 

If you can master these basic skills, you'll have what it takes to become a successful BIW engineer.

As a BIW engineer, you will work with sheet metal a lot. So it's important to understand the basics—how to measure and cut it, how to weld and join it, and how to form it into different shapes.

 

You need to know several different techniques to be successful with sheet metal. You should be able to MIG weld, tig weld, and use a brake press. And if you're looking to move up in the industry, you might want to learn how to operate a laser or plasma cutter. These are BIW sheet metal design requirements every domain-centric design engineer must fulfil before they appear for job interviews.

 

Expertise in the Field of Machinery

 

As a BIW engineer, you will deal with heavy machinery. So you must be comfortable with assembly and have the skills to organise things quickly and correctly.

 

You should also be able to read blueprints and schematics and be comfortable working with computers. That's because a lot of the design work is digital, and BIW engineers should be able to translate the plans into manufacturable parts.

 

Maths skills are also important, as you'll need to do calculations to make sure the pieces fit together properly and the finished product is within tolerances. Production

If a proposed prototype isn't working, you need to be able to figure out why and fix it.

Maintenance

 

An BIW engineer is responsible for maintaining a car's bodywork and interior fittings apart from fulfilling the BIW mentioned above design requirements. Upkeeping the maintenance includes detailed planning for the body, trim, doors, engine and chassis.

 

To be a successful BIW engineer, you need to understand how vehicles work and can carry out basic maintenance tasks. You should also be able to use tools and equipment safely and effectively.

 

Soft Skills 

The ideal candidate should possess good communication skills. Working in a team and maintaining a healthy relationship with colleagues is a mandate if you wish to excel in your career. Analytical skills are tested by the interviewer when you appear for a one-on-one screening. To pass the test, you must practise well in advance problem-solving evaluations related to the job role.
