Course Overview

The field of engineering involves exhaustive planning, designing, simulating, and analysis of complex systems that replicate real-world models. Simulink, an extension of MATLAB, offers a graphical solution for engineers to design and analyze these non-linear and linear models, as well as understand their dynamic performance under various conditions. 

This course will give you a basic understanding of the Simulink UI, as well as how to perform basic operations involved in the analysis of systems. By the end of this course, you will have a well-versed understanding of: 

  • Fundamentals of model building on Simulink 
  • Generating basic waveforms 
  • Trigonometric functions and solving differential equations 
  • Spring-mass-damper systems 
  • Simple harmonic oscillators 
  • Control system design (linear and nonlinear)
  • PID design

Throughout this course, you will get to work on challenges that require application of the Simulink concepts learned. This course will culminate with an industry-level project that requires first-hand development of a model on Simulink.

Week 1 - Overview

Simulink is a software environment for performing simulations, developing multi domain physical systems, and model-based design. It is essential for learners to understand the basics of the UI and how models are built in it.

In this week, you will learn about 

  • Simulink Basics
  • Fundamentals of Model Building
  • Sources and Sinks

Week 2 - Basic Waveforms

Users can generate basic waveforms on the Simulink environment to understand the response of systems to specific inputs. As it is essential to simulate physical systems and understand their behaviour under different conditions, it is important for learners to know how to generate these waveforms. 

In this week, you will learn about 

  • Unit Step Function
  • Ramp Function
  • Pulse Function
  • Sum and Difference of Step Functions

Week 3 - Trigonometric Functions

Simulink has trigonometric function blocks that carry out trigonometric operations. The function list has a series of operations to choose from depending on your requirements. It is important for learners to know how to work with trigonometric functions in the Simulink environment, and their respective applications.

In this week, you will learn about 

  • Sine, Cosine and Tangent Functions
  • Cosecant Function
  • Secant Function
  • Cotangent Function
  • Applications of Trigonometric Functions

Week 4 - Differential Equations

Users can set up and solve differential equations on the Simulink environment. As differential equations are central to both physical and mathematical systems, it is important for learners to know how to solve them in the Simulink environment.

Week 5 - Spring-Mass-Damper Systems and Stability

Spring-mass-damper systems can be modeled using Simulink. In addition to this, systems can also be studied on Simulink to determine if they are stable by solving the associated equations. It is important for learners to understand how to model systems, and perform stability analysis on them.

  • Spring-Mass-Damper Systems and Stability

Week 6 - Simple Harmonic Oscillator and Control System Design

Simple harmonic oscillators and control systems can be designed and modeled in the Simulink environment. These models can also be analyzed by users as needed.

Week 7 - Linear Control System Design

Control systems, both linear and nonlinear, can be designed, simulated, and analyzed using Simulink. they can be studied at various operating points. As control systems are fundamental to understanding real-world phenomenon, it is essential for learners to know how to design them in the Simulink environment.

In this week, you will learn about 

  • Control system objectives
  • PID (Proportional, Integral and Derivative) Control Design
  • Other time domain designs
  • Frequency domain designs

Week 8 - PID Design for a Direct Current (DC) Machine

PID controllers can be designed, simulated, and studied in the Simulink environment. As these controllers are found in many components, it is important to know how to design and study their behavior under different conditions.

  • Modelling a Direct Current (DC) Machine
  • PID Design for a DC Motor
  • Speed control of a DC motor
  • Transfer functions

Week 9 - Linearization and Nonlinear Control

Linear and nonlinear models can be designed on Simulink. Moreover, nonlinear models can be linearized using the linear analysis tools. The linearizations of Simulink models across different operating conditions can also be determined. It is important for learners to understand how to work with Simulink control design.

Industry Projects

Speed Control of a Direct Current (DC) Motor

You will have to develop a Simulink model for a DC motor based on the given schematic figure. The controller should be designed and tested to maintain the desired speed for the motor using the proportional, integral, and derivative (PID) control design. At the end of this project, you should deliver a MATLAB script that defines modeling and control design parameters, as well as a Simulink model that simulates and verifies the design.
