The course Automotive BIW Design and Development Part 2 using NXCAD is a continuation from it's first part. The first part required the student to work on projects involving the development of Hood, Fender, Rood and Windshield of an SUV. This part of the course deals with the rest of the automotive parts which include 

  1. Rear Door
  2. Side Body
  3. Side Door
  4. Dash, Frame, Floor and Tunnel
  5. Engine Compartment

Upon completion of this course you would have gained a comprehensive understanding of various physical and theoretical design factors and design knowledge of first-rate Automotive BiW components.You can start your career as a design engineer in any sheet metal domain and with 2 to 3 years of experience, you can become a full-fledged BIW engineer.

1Rear door design

Week 11 to 13 which is a continuation of the first course will cover the following topics:

  • Design requirements for the tailgate components
  • Functional requirements
  • Rear visibility criteria regulations
  • Rear crash regulations and requirements
  • Sealing and its function
  • Joining techniques like Hemming, spot welding, etc
  • Manufacturing Technique using a casting part
  • Gap and flushness requirements

    • Hinge
    • Gas-stay/ powerlifter

2Side-Body Design

Week 14-20 of this course will cover the following topics related to the design of Side body of the SUV

  • Class-A surface correction

    • A-Pillar lower
    • A-pillar middle

4Forming process: Rubber parts design and development

Week 27 of this course will focus on:

  • Functions of rubber parts

5Dash_frame_floor_tunnel design (DFFT Design)

Week 28 to 34 of this course will cover the design of the Dash, Frame, Floor and Tunnel

  • Floor: various parts, possible design variations and joining methods.
  • Dash panel and its characteristics
  • Frame integration to the floor assembly and force resolving.
  • Tunnel design variations and its functionality.

6Joining Element

Week 35 of the course will focus on joining elements

    • Outer panel

  • You will learn how to create flanges for different sections so that the other components such as the A-pillar, Side doors, Roof, Windshield, Rear door and the Floor assembly can be integrated to the side body.
  • You will learn the different types of components involved in the design of both the outer and inner panels.

In this project you will learn the process of designing the Side Door. This project will help you understand the following–

  • How the Side Door works.
  • What is the Side Door Architecture.
  • How to Create the hinges and its mounting styles.
  • What role a side door plays in side impact/side crash.
  • What creates the premium feel for the door.
  • What is the relation of the side door with body side.
  • What are Mounting points and fixation points for the Trims (plastics) and other internal members like window regulators, speakers etc.

Project 3

Highlights

In this project you will learn how to design the engine compartment and learn –

  • What are the Important structural members of the engine compartment.
  • The design requirements of those components.
  • How does the load distribute along these members.
  • What are the members used for protecting the engine.
  • The mounting members for fender and bumper as well as engine.
  • How to connect the engine compartment to the Dashpanel Reinforcement.
