Course Overview

Very-large-scale integration (VLSI) is a process of embedding or integrating hundreds of thousands of transistors onto a singular silicon semiconductor microchip. VLSI front-end design includes digital design using a hardware description language, for example, Verilog, System Verilog, and VHDL. Furthermore, this stage encompasses design verification via simulation and other verification techniques. The entire process also incorporates designing, which starts with the gates and continues through to design for testability. So, understanding digital electronics is very important in terms of IC fabrication and placement as front-end engineer.

  • Digital system versus analog system

Week 2- Logic gates

  • Basic logic gates
  • Universal gates

  • Implementation of any function using logic gates
  • CMOS logic
  • NAND/NOR gate using CMOS.

Week 3- Boolean algebra

  • Boolean Algebra
  • Basic postulates
  • Practice problems based on Boolean algebra

Week 4- Function simplification using Karnaugh map

The folowing topics are covered in this week:

  • Standard representation of logic functions -SOP forms
  • Simplification of switching functions - K-map
  • Standard representation of logic functions POS forms
  • Canonical form

Week 5- Code converters

The following topics are covered in this week:

  • Positional number system
  • Binary coded decimal codes
  • Gray codes
  • Error detection code
  • Parity check codes
  • Error correction code
  • Hamming code
  • Conversion of one code to another code system.

Week 6- Combinational logic circuits

The following topics are covered in this week:

  • Combinational logic
  • Half adder
  • Full adder
  • Half subtractor

  • Encoder, decoder

Week 7- Mux based design

The following topics are covered in this week:

  • Multiplexer
  • Demultiplexer
  • Design of all the logic gates using 2:1 multiplexer

Week 8- Functions using multiplexer

The following topics are covered in this week:

  • 4 variable function design using 16:1, 8:1, 4:1 and 2:1 multiplexer
  • 3 variable function using 8:1/4:1/2:1
  • 2 variable function design using 4:1 and 2:1 multiplexer

Week 9- Sequential logic circuits

The following topics are covered this week:

  • Latches and flip-flops (SR, JK, D and T)
  • Race around condition
  • Asynchronous inputs
  • Conversion of one flip-flop to another
  • Shift registers (SISO,PISO, SIPO, PIPO)
  • Counters

Week 10- FSM

Finite-State Machine(FSM) is mathematical model for computation which are applied in video games, traffic lighting, language processing, etc. There are different types of FSM models out of which we will understand Mealy and Moore model in this week. 

Week 11- Programmable logic devices

The following topics are covered in this week:

  • PLD, PAL, PLA, PROM,
  • Reconfigurable computing FPGA, ASIC

Industry Projects in Chennai

Project 1

In an exhibition, there are 8 stalls, numbering from A-H. All these stalls are commercial stalls.

Project 2

In a class of 16 students, ranging from roll number 0 to 15. A test of general knowledge was conducted. In which, roll number 15, did not appear, so zero mark was assigned to him. The rest of the class students, appeared in the test.
