Course Overview

Lithium-ion batteries dominate the electric vehicle industry, and are the most commonly used source of energy for EVs and HEVs. Electric vehicles are integrated with a battery thermal management system (BTMS) to ensure the lithium ion battery pack is operating within the optimal temperature range to yield maximum performance. 

This course is designed to teach you about the transfer of heat, fluid, and energy in an EV battery system. You will also understand the importance and working of a BTMS in the cooling of an EV battery pack. By using software tools such as Ansys Fluent, MATLAB, and Simulink, you will get to simulate and assess the performance of a BTMS across different operating conditions.

Week 1 - Concept of Heat Transfer and Fluid Flow

Industry Projects

1D Thermal System Model for Liquid Cooling System using MATLAB Simulink

In this project, you will model a 1D thermal system for a liquid cooling system using MATLAB Simulink. You will also determine the heat generation in the battery pack, and understand the implementation of the EVC model for the BTMS application. 

3D Modelling of Liquid and Air Cooled Cooling Systems using Ansys Fluent

Part 1

In this project, you will use Ansys Fluent to create a 3D model of a liquid-cooled cooling system. You will create geometry for the battery module with a liquid cooling system using space-calm. 

Part 2

You will create a 3D model of an air-cooled cooling system using Ansys Fluent. In this project, you will also create geometry for the battery module with a liquid cooling system using space-calm.
