SOFTWARE COVERED

Altium

Altium is a PC based electronics design software used to design printed circuit boards (PCB).  It is one of the most powerful high end PCB design software available in the market today. With over 30 years of history, Altium is still considered as one of the best ECAD design software in the market. Altium acquired the online electronic part search tool company Octopart in the year 2015. 

Altium designer tool can be configured to meet a wide variety of users requirements. 

Altium component management is maintained using Altium Concord Pro software which helps engineers to identify the component information such as availability, cost, traceability and component structure and help engineers to make a decision easy and quick.  

With Altium’s unique range of technologies, the ECAD designers can develop their products in an innovative way within the timeframe and on budget. 


The projects included in the course

Project 1

Highlights

To design a PCB using Altium ECAD software for a low dropout voltage regulator (LDO) for 5V input, stepping down to 3.3V

Challenge:

  • Creating a workspace for MIC33030_3V3
  • Defining a PCB board size of 40mm x 40mm for a 2 layer PCB
  • PCB clearance to be set as 0.2mm and track width to be 0.3mm for power line and 0.2mm for rest of the circuit
  • Following the block diagram provided for creating the schematic and using the datasheet for creating the footprint and symbol.
  • Molex 3 pin 2.54mm connector on the input and 2 pin connector on the output
  • Identifying the key points to consider for PCB design datasheet
  • Assemble and route the components as recommended by the datasheet
  • Add 4 mounting holes (3mm) on all corners with 2 fiducials diagonally opposite
  • PCB board with the text (“DC-DC Power Supply – Rev1”)
  • Input connector – text “Input 5V” “Ground” and “Enable”, Output connector – text “Output - 3.3V” “Ground”
  • Copper pour added on the top and bottom layer for ground net and all passive components with thermal relief

Project 2

Highlights

To design a double sided USB type C to RJ45 ethernet interface PCB utilising bus-powered following the length matching of the high speed signals and EMC/EMI complaint.

Challenge:

  • Creating a workspace for LAN7800 in altium
  • Defining a PCB board size using the DXF data provided
  • PCB clearance to be set as 0.15mm and track width to be 0.2mm for power line and 0.15mm for rest of the circuit
  • Following the block diagram provided for creating the schematic and using the datasheet for creating the footprint and symbol.
  • Use Saturn PCB tool to find the values for 100ohm impedance for the high speed differential pair signals
  • Set PCB to 4 layer following the board stackup provided
  • Identifying the key points to consider for PCB design using the datasheet
  • Assemble and route the components as recommended by the datasheet
  • Place the components on both the sides of the PCB and tracking on both sides.
  • Add 2 fiducials diagonally opposite
  • PCB board with the text (“Ethernet Interface”)
  • Generate 3D files for all the components and a 3D view.
  • Generate PCB panel of 150mm x 150mm and place as many circuits as possible and follow routed method using mouse bites
  • Generate complete output files for DFM and DFA (Gerber, Altium draftsman, X Y data, BOM, assembly diagram, fabrication diagram)
