A Quick Overview

This course covers the application of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) theory on internal flows and especially focuses on simulating HVAC applications like; heat exchangers, hot aisle, cold aisle for data centre, superchargers, and turbochargers. In this course, students will be introduced to CONVERGE STUDIO in detail.

These are the other software that a student will work on during the duration of the course.

CYGWIN/CMD: Command-line window to run the simulation
PARAVIEW: Post-Processing software (to post-process the results)

It’s important to understand how fluid flows through these applications and where the fluid is separating, and where the recirculation zone is generated. Students will also study how the shape of the blades and shape of outlet runners affect the results and they will also plot performance curves for all applications. Converge has an added advantage of automated meshing that helps save time.

At the end of this course, you will be able to set up any internal flow problem, clean up any complicated geometry, and model Turbulence. You will also learn to set up the case for multi-phase, CHT. Moreover, you will learn the theory behind the concepts of Turbulence (RANS), Cavitation, Interfaces, and Regions.

COURSE SYLLABUS

1CONVERGE STUDIO Module

In this module, you will learn how to set up a CFD simulation using CONVERGE CFD. You will be provided with a step-by-step guide on the following:

CAD import and cleanup
Decomposing the model into boundaries and volumetric regions
Inputting valve timing
Choosing turbulence and combustion models
Running the case in a parallel environment
Post-processing

2Surface Preparation

In this module, you will cover surface preparation in full detail.

Setting up the moving boundaries
Geometry cleanup

3Region Initialization

In this module, you will learn the following concepts:

Initializing pressure, temperature, and species concentration in different flow regions
Disconnect triangles

4Turbulence Modelling

In this module, you will learn how turbulence is modelled and simulated in a state-of-the-art CFD solver. You will learn about the different classes of turbulence models and understand their merits and demerits.

Learn about the RANS approach to model turbulence
Comprehend the math involved behind RANS and its derivations
Learn theory on different types of turbulence models available (RNG k-ε, k-ω SST, etc.) and appreciate which model is suitable for which type of application

5Cavitation Modelling

In this module, you will learn how cavitation can be simulated. You will focus on the volume of the fluid method. You will also learn about VOID FRACTION which is the basis of VOF method.

6Output Processing

In this module, you will learn how to extract critical output that is relevant to pumps and compressors.

Projects Overview

Performance Ccharacterization of a Centrifugal Pump

The objective of this project is to simulate flow through a centrifugal pump and obtain the pump performance curve. The performance curve is the plot of volume flow rate Vs. total pressure drop. It is a tool that shows how a pump is going to behave in terms of head and flow. The performance curve defines the range of possible operating conditions for the pump. With the help of this curve, we can determine the size of the impeller, NPSH, and the efficiency required to pump against a particular head and at a given flow rate. You will be running transient simulations so that you can capture the flow physics.

Thermal Management Simulation of a Hot Aisle and a Cold Aisle Containment System

The objective of this project is to simulate flow through a model data center and determine the airflow patterns and understand where potential hotspot regions appear. These types of simulations help us in understanding how the air and refrigeration systems need to be placed differently for different system layouts.

Simulation of a Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger

Heat exchangers occur in HVAC systems on airside loops, refrigerant loops, and more. Learning how to simulate these systems, will help you understand how much pressure drop occurs and the effectiveness of Heat Exchangers.

Flow through Winkyl-Hoffer Nozzle (2D Cavitation)

The objective of this project is to look for the cavitation zone by using the Volume of Fluid (VOF) method and plot the cavitation zone length with respect to the pressure difference.

The study of cavitation is very important as it affects mass flow rates coming into a cylinder via fuel injectors. Cavitation occurs because of a sudden drop in pressure heads and this occurs because of abrupt change in flow area. When the flow area suddenly decreases, it creates a zone of low pressure or separation zone. When the pressure becomes lower than the vapour pressure of the fluid, fluid instantaneously vaporizes into the gas phase and this affects the injector properties in terms of delivering the required fuel flow rate and this can further affect the combustion and emission performance. And that’s why it’s very important to look at cavitation in automotive applications. In the HVAC or Turbomachinery world, cavitation is extremely important in rotating devices.

For example, in a centrifugal pump, the impeller rotates at a very high speed because of which a low-pressure zone and fluid vaporize forming gas bubbles that hit the component and causes corrosion and erosion of that particular component and decrease the life of the component.

Therefore, the study of cavitation is extremely important and CFD is the major tool to study this complex process.

Turbocharger Flow Analysis

The objective of this project is to simulate flow through a Turbocharger and obtain the performance curve. You will be running transient simulations to capture the flow Physics.
