Course Overview

Road infrastructure plays a vital role in more than just safe and efficient transportation. In fact, as globalization continues, roads are  essential to the social and economic development of countries. This makes it important for engineers in the civil industry to have a strong hold on the underlying design concepts of roadways.

By taking this course, learners will gain a fundamental understanding of roadway design, survey data collection, horizontal/vertical alignment, geometric control factors, and pavement design. This course will elaborate on the selection of cross sectional elements based on roadway conditions. Learners will also be exposed to modern industry design standards such as the Indian Road Congress (IRC) and American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). Throughout this course, learners will get hands-on experience with the Civil 3D software.

Course Syllabus

Week 1 - Background of Roadway Design

As roads connect people and vehicles across different locations, it is important that they are designed to tolerate loads. Learners must understand the fundamental engineering design processes and standards followed in the civil industry when constructing roads.

This week will cover

  • Why we design roads
  • Importance of a holistic road network
  • Various verticals and departments involved in roadway design
  • Decision making process followed by highway designers

Week 2 - Survey and Design Standards

Before roads are constructed, the site and surrounding land is surveyed to determine if it is suitable and safe. For engineers working in the civil industry, it is important to understand the parameters surveyed, how the data is obtained, and how it is interpreted to make decisions. 

This week will cover 

  • Civil 3D work obtained from survey teams and from maps
  • Topographical data, traffic data, axle survey data
  • Design alternatives and its evaluation
  • Understanding existing design criteria and proposing design standards.

Week 3 - Horizontal Design or Fixation of Roadway Plan

Roads have a horizontal and vertical profile, each having their own design considerations. It is important to understand the basics of horizontal road design, and the tangents, spirals, and curves involved in it. 

This week will cover

  • Fundamental concepts involved in horizontal design
  • Objects in horizontal alignment: tangent, spiral and the curve
  • Super elevation and its importance in highway design
  • Extra widening at curve locations
  • Critical checks for an efficient highway design

Week 4 - Pavement Design

The pavement layer of roads is essential in safely and efficiently distributing the load of passing vehicles to the soil layer below. It is important for learners to understand the basics of pavement design, and the two main types - rigid and flexible pavements. 

This week will cover 

  • Fundamentals of pavement design
  • Annual traffic calculation
  • Rigid pavement design
  • Flexible pavement design

Week 5 - Vertical Design or Fixation of Roadway Profile

Highway roads have different elevations and alignments in their vertical profile. The vertical design of a road undergoes much engineering and consideration to ensure it is safe for vehicles to travel on. It is important for learners to understand vertical design consideration when developing roads. 

This week will cover

  • Fundamental concepts of vertical design
  • SSD check on vertical profile
  • Criteria for fixing vertical design profile

Week 6 - Cross-Sectional Elements and Earthwork Volume Calculations

Cross-sectional elements are significant in the design of roads as they affect how well load is tolerated. It is therefore important for learners to understand how cross-sections are selected according to varying roadway conditions. 

This week will cover

  • Selection of cross sections based on roadway conditions
  • Embankment slope considerations
  • Earthwork volume calculations

Week 7 - Introduction to Civil 3D

Civil 3D is used by civil engineers in the industry to design roadways and associated elements. This software allows use of features like profiles and alignments. It is important for learners to understand the basics of the Civil 3D UI in the design of roads. 

This week will cover

  • Interface: Ribbons and tool palettes
  • Importing survey data
  • Basics of points
  • Horizontal alignment
  • Vertical profile

Industry Projects

Designing a Road from Topographic Data

Learners are to understand data from the surveyor, and process it to build an effective model of a road. Using this model, learners are to arrive at the cross section and perform quantity calculations. Development of the model requires performing the following: 

  • Point creation and grouping with the help of description.
  • Preparation of surface and importance of breaklines.
  • Horizontal alignment design and adding super elevation.
  • Vertical profile design.
  • Cross section template creation based on proposed conditions.
  • Corridor modelling and extraction of finished surfaces.
  • Cross sections production based on corridor modeling.
  • Earthwork quantities and material quantities takeoff.
