A Quick Overview

What a difference a decade makes! When it comes to science and technology, the changes are huge and remarkable. There will be developments that may even change the entire perspective and functioning of the industry. The construction industry is no exception to this.

Previously, people used diagrams and blueprints to represent the details of a building. The inabilities in these 2D representations (like difficulty in visualizing models) made us move toward 3D models. Following this, we have BIM (Building Information Modeling) which provides us with not only the 3D representation of the model but also its physical and functional characteristics.

BIM is the state of the art technology in the AEC(Architecture, Engineering and Construction) Industry. It is a model-based development process that connects all the professionals of the AEC industry to design, construct, manage and maintain infrastructure. Each model in BIM stores information like how it looks, its geometry and how it behaves, and these models are stored in a location mutually accessible by all employees, resulting in better communication for increasing efficiency. Also, BIM models help us explore every aspect of the building model and the data can be manipulated for improving the design or to make it meet the requirements. This further helps us to predict and rectify the issues that may arise throughout the life-cycle of the model, starting from the conception of design.

The role of BIM in the AEC industry is exceptional and learning this will give an edge to the people who aspire to pursue their careers in the AEC domain. This course is exclusively designed for those learners and it covers the fundamentals to build a firm theoretical understanding of the BIM processes. This course focuses on Revit software as an integral tool to create and manage digital models. The exclusively designed course syllabus and the projects and challenges added to implement the concepts will benefit the students in a significant way.

People with strong knowledge of BIM concepts and hands-on experience in Revit can apply for job roles like BIM Architect, BIM Modeller, Revit Developer, BIM Coordinator and BIM Specialist.

Projects Overview

Project 1

Model an apartment with 4 units on each floor (2- 3 BHK) of 7 storeys with stilt parking facility. Design and model the structural and HVAC elements as required.

1. Print BOQ and estimates from the model for different trades
2. Print layouts for floor plans trade wise and one including all trades
3. Print 3D views from different interior and exterior locations

Project 2

Model one multi storeyed twisting tower with maximum architectural features.

1. Create a dynamo script to create multi storeyed complex structure.
2. Add façade design and other architectural features using massing.
3. Print 3D views from different interior and exterior locations. Create walk through videos as well as few exterior rendered images.
4. Prepare a report outlining the pros and cons of applying the BIM processes in this project. Sum up the challenges faced and how it can be rectified in future projects.

Revit is a BIM software from Autodesk that brings all architecture, engineering, and construction disciplines into a unified modelling environment, driving more efficient and cost-effective projects. This software allows you to design the elements like buildings, architectures, elevations, etc., It is fully loaded with a lot of professional designing tools, elements, families and several plug-ins that make the user work more effectively and efficiently. Revit concentrates only on Architectural design, structural, and MEP elements. The Process starting from Conceptual design, visualization, and analysis to fabrication and construction, is collectively known as a project cycle. This BIM software makes the user complete the project cycle accurately and effectively.

Dynamo is a graphical programming interface that lets you customize your building information workflow. This plug-in is used in Revit to automate the process by visual scripting.

BIM One is a plugin used in Revit to export and import excel files which allows you to facilitate the management of your data in your digital models by processing it outside of Revit.
